iPhone makes travel eSIM almost boring — which is the point. Buy the plan in Abroad, install over Wi‑Fi, then flip one switch when you land.
This tutorial is for iPhone XS, XR, and later. If you are unsure, start with how to check if your phone supports eSIM.
1. Buy the plan in the app
Download Abroad, choose your country, and complete checkout. Popular starting points: Japan, USA, UK.
2. Install from Abroad
Open the eSIM in the app and tap Install. On supported iPhones, one-tap activation adds the line without a QR code. If you are offered a QR instead, open Camera or Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM and scan it.
- 1Stay on Wi‑Fi until iOS says the eSIM is added.
- 2When iOS asks for a label, call it “Abroad” so it is easy to find later.
- 3Allow the new line. You can keep your primary line on for calls and SMS.
3. Set data to the travel line
- 1Go to Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Data).
- 2Set Cellular Data to the Abroad line when you arrive.
- 3Turn Data Roaming on for the Abroad line only.
- 4Leave Data Roaming off on your home line so your carrier cannot bill you.
Most Abroad plans start on first local connection — not when you tap Buy. Installing at home does not usually burn validity days.
If something looks stuck
- Toggle Airplane mode once after landing.
- Confirm you selected the Abroad line for cellular data.
- Restart the phone if the line shows “No service” for more than a few minutes after arrival.
- Still stuck? Help & support covers the usual cases.
