You do not need a perfect forecast. You need a range that matches how you actually use a phone on the road.
A practical range
- City weekend, maps + chat: 1–3 GB.
- Week of photos, rideshare, light social video: 5–10 GB.
- Work trip with hotspot: 10 GB+ or unlimited, depending on calls and uploads.
What eats data
Offline maps help. So does hotel Wi‑Fi for backups. Streaming and tethering are the two things that turn a 3 GB plan into a short story. Hotspot is available on supported Abroad plans — check the plan card in-app.
Match the plan to the trip
Two weeks in Japan with trains and translation leans toward a larger pack — see Japan eSIM. Beach days in Thailand with café Wi‑Fi can stay smaller — Thailand eSIM. Multi-country Europe is often happier on one regional-style itinerary; start with the Europe eSIM guide.
If you run low, top up in the Abroad app instead of installing a second eSIM. That is usually faster than guessing high on day one.
Questions
Yes for maps, chat, and light browsing. No if you hotspot a laptop or stream video every night.
Unlimited is peace of mind for hotspot-heavy trips. For city weekends, a 5–10 GB pack is often enough — check options in the Abroad app.
