What is a travel eSIM?
A plain-English guide to travel eSIMs: how digital SIMs work, why they beat roaming, and how to stay online in 190+ countries.

A travel eSIM is a digital SIM built into your phone. Instead of swapping a plastic card at the airport, you download a prepaid data plan and install it in Settings — usually in under a minute.
Abroad is a travel eSIM for 190+ countries. You pick a destination in the app, pay once, and land already able to open maps, rides, and messages.
How it works
- 1Confirm your phone supports eSIM. Dial *#06# — if you see an EID, you are ready. Full compatibility check.
- 2Buy a plan for your destination. Start with pages like Japan eSIM, USA eSIM, or Thailand eSIM.
- 3Install from the Abroad app over Wi‑Fi. iPhone and Android both have a short walkthrough: iPhone tutorial and Android tutorial.
- 4When you arrive, turn on the Abroad line (and data roaming on that line only). Your home SIM can stay on for WhatsApp and banking codes.
Why travelers use eSIM instead of roaming
Roaming is convenient until the bill arrives. A prepaid travel eSIM shows the price up front. You are not renting data from your home carrier at hotel-minibar rates.
You also skip the kiosk: no passport photocopy, no paper clip for the SIM tray, no “we only take cash.” If that tradeoff still feels abstract, read eSIM vs international roaming.
What a travel eSIM is not
- It is usually data-first. Voice still works over WhatsApp, FaceTime, and similar apps.
- It does not unlock a locked phone. Carrier-locked devices may still need the original SIM for calls.
- It is not the same as public Wi‑Fi. You get a mobile connection that follows you out of cafés.
